“Our Journey through Lent: Forgiveness”
A Centering Thought
“Whatever you do, don’t give up on anybody. God can lift anybody, anytime, from any place…. Old folk down in my native Kentucky used to put it this way, ‘[God] can lift you from a dead level to a living perpendicular.’” ― William Augustus Jones, Jr., Pastor and Social Activist
Call to Worship
Come to the Lord, who is rich in grace and forgiveness;
Approach our God, who is full of mercy and love.
We will praise God with all our heart.
And we will glorify the name of the Most High forever.
Come to the Lord, Approach our God!
For the Lord is great, and God’s mercies endure forever!
Hymn of Praise: “How Great Thou Art”
Verse 1: O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Chorus: Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Verse 2: And when I think, that God, God’s Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Verse 3: When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!”
Gracious God, your love knows no limits.
You meet us on our life’s journey with healing and forgiveness.
Visit us with your presence,
Saturate us with your Spirit,
Bathe us in your streams of living water,
Strengthen us to more faithfully follow your gospel,
that our lives might acknowledge and worship you. Amen.
Our Congregational Vision
All: The Open Church is a sacred place where those who are hurting, confused, and in need can find healing and hope, regardless of color, culture, or creed.
One: It is a wide place where “Abraham’s family” – Christians, Jews, and Muslims – can dialogue with Buddhists and Bahá’is and where Hindus can dialogue with Humanists.
All: The Open Church is a joyful place where children, seniors, migrant workers, people experiencing homelessness, and scholars eagerly learn from and teach one another.
One: It is a safe place where varied ethnicities and capabilities, genders and sexual identities, social and economic groups gather in peace to break bread at Christ’s Communion Table, as we break down stereotypes.
All: As sacred siblings born to our Heavenly Father who is Divine Mother of us all, we practice radically inclusive love that proclaims and builds up the “kin-dom of God.”
Koinonia: A Care-Full Community (Koinonia is the New Testament word for “fellowship.”)
Offering: We give with open-handed generosity because when we give, we are most like God.
Prayer of Thanksgiving: We thank you, Lord, for these gifts. Amen.
Wisdom from the Scriptures: Mark 7:24-37
Song of Preparation
Sermon: “When Jesus Is in Need Of Forgiveness”
Prayers of the People
After each prayer, please respond with:
"O God, with your forgiving mercy, hear our prayer."
Verse 1: Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now, I see.
Verse 2: T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear, the hour I first believed.
Verse 3: Through many dangers, toils and snares, we have already come,
T’was Grace that brought us safe thus far, and Grace will lead us home.
